  • Sibomana Patrick unveiled as Shakhtyor Soligorsk player

    {Rwandan footballer and former APR FC player Patrick ‘Papp’ Sibomana was on Friday officially unveiled as a Shakhtyor Soligorsk FC player.
    }

    The Belarusian top division club announced on their social network on Friday, August 4th, 2017 that the former APR FC player has finished signing a three-year contract deal.

    The former Isonga FC player left the Kigali last week to start to training with the new club as the club head coach Shakhtyor Soligorsk couldn’t wait to receive.

    Sibomana told IGIHE that he was finalized the deal by putting pen on paper, I am now a player for c. It’s a good team, for the short time I have spent here they have given warm welcome.

    “After the first training with the team, the coach told me that he was happy and he said that he believes I will assist the team but asked me to continue working hard so to raise my level of performance.”

    When asked about the contract deal, the 22-year-old player was gritty, preferred to remain silent about it. Shakhtyor Soligorsk won the first Belarus Super Cup on 1985, 1986 and 1988.

  • Early results show President Kagame in the lead

    {Preliminary results from Rwanda’s election show President Paul Kagame with a strong lead against his two challengers. }

    Kagame looked set for a landslide victory Friday as election results trickling in showed the incumbent with an average 98 percent of the vote in districts counted.
    Provisional turnout is 97 percent of the 6.8 million registered voters.

    Results from some rural districts show President Paul Kagame with numbers exceeding 95 percent.

    Around the country, Rwandans gathered to hear the results, with some already celebrating a win for Kagame.

  • Over 96% voters turnout for the Presidential elections, NEC confirms

    National Electoral Commission, has revealed that the 2017 presidential polls had a total voter turnout of over 96 per cent during the 2017 Presidential elections that just concluded.

    More than 6.8 million Rwandans voted in the just concluded presidential elections NEC told the media during a news conference during the final provisional results announcement.

    President Paul Kagame, won with 98.63 per cent of the vote after 6,650,722 Rwandans cast their ballots in his favour.

    Democratic Green Party of Rwanda candidate Frank Habineza with 31,633 votes (0.47 per cent) and independent Candidate Phillippe Mpayimana garnered came second with 49,117 votes (0.73 per cent). According to the law, NEC has up to seven days to officially announce the final results after reviewing the election results

    The NEC Executive Secretary, Charles Munyaneza, said that the commission will not take the 7 days and are likely to make the official announcement on Tuesday August 8.
    Munyaneza said they have not received any complaints from any of the candidates in respect to the elections results.

    He pointed out that some of the election observers like COMESA praised and were satisfied with the good organization of elections and during the campaigns period.

  • ATPU cops arrest British citizen found with 42 bullets at Moi airport

    {Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) officers in Kenya are interrogating a British national arrested at Moi international Airport with two magazines and 42 bullets.}

    Reports indicate Surone Abdiwahid, 27, was arrested at the departure section during the screening of her luggage.

    Coast regional police boss Larry Keing said the woman of Somali origin was handed over to the ATPU for further interrogation and profiling.

    Police said the woman holds a British passport and was to travel to Nairobi before catching a Kenya Airways flight to London.

    “The 9mm ammunition were concealed in her suitcase when they were discovered. We are yet to establish if she is a licensed gun holder and what her intention of smuggling bullets to the plane was,” a senior ATPU officer said on Thursday.

    The officer, who did not want to be named, said the woman will be taken to court so police seek more days to complete investigations.

    He said the government has already contacted the British Embassy in Nairobi to assist in the probe.

    “We are working with different agencies and foreigners in the investigation. The incident is being treated as a potential act of terrorism.”

    The UK government has suffered terrorism attacks carried out by home grown terrorist groups motivated by extremist Islamic ideals.

    Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the Manchester suicide bombing and the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks.

    Kenyan security agents are also on higher alert following sporadic attacks by terror group al Shabaab in counties including Lamu, Mandera, Garissa and Wajir.
    The group has targeted both civilians and security agents.

  • Rwanda Filmmakers nominated for Global awards

    {Rwanda filmmakers Mr. Potential Kabarebe and Jean Baptiste Nyabyenda have been nominated for the 9th edition of ‘Focus on Ability’ Film Festival.}

    The film festival that started accepting entrances from July 30 and ends on 9th is about telling stories about people living with disabilities.

    This year has been biggest, with generous sponsors who donated over $140,000 worth of cash and prizes to encourage film makers and people with disability to tell their stories.

    Over 51 films from various countries worldwide have been nominated, and the duo’s films feature in the ‘International Entry’ category.

    The Duo’s films have been marked for displaying a poignant and yet hopeful message to people living with disabilities.

    “Mr. Potential Kabarebe” is a raw retelling but an ultimately hopeful film about Kabarebe Aphrodice, a visually impaired teacher who doesn’t feel limited by his loss of sight, since his young age, and who is perfectly able to teach children, at a secondary school.
    In My Destiny, enters a visually impaired Hagenimana Fabien, a talented guitarist whose passion isn’t restrained by his disability; he even teaches others despite his visual impairment.

    In 2016, 194 films were entered from 18 countries. Previous years films have been both educational and inspirational and have been viewed in 168 countries around the world and voted on by over 500,000 people.

  • AS Vita Club parts ways with Rwandan striker Ernest Sugira

    {Exclusive: In a shocking turn of events, Rwanda striker Ernest Sugira and Democratic Republic of Congo football club, AS Vita Club have parted ways, IGIHE learns.
    The forward who was signed last year on a lucrative deal by head coach Florent Ibenge after performing well in the 2016 CHAN for national team Amavubi, has just spent one year with the club.

    IGIHE has reliably learned that talks with the attacker have hit a dead end and the player has decided to return back at home.

    The tall striker joined AS Vita in July 2016 from AS Kigali after completing a deal that saw the striker earn Rwf4m every month. The 25-year-old signed an 18-month deal worth Rwf102m including transfer fees.

    Sugira scored three goals for Rwanda in CHAN including a brace against Gabon in a 2-1 win and one against DR Congo in a 2-1 defeat in the last eight, which ultimately earned him a place in the team of the tournament – the only Amavubi player in the side in the CHAN 2016 selected squad.

    After joining the DRC club, the player struggled to pick form and suffered some injuries but coach Ibenge revealed that he only needed time to settle in. But even after some time, the players failed to settle in DRC club a reason why it is reported the club took a decision to part ways with the striker.

    Sugira told IGIHE “ Right now we have part ways with AS Vita Club, I have no problem with them. My contract was remaining with four months on my contract but we met and discussed with the management a reason why they released me.”

    Sugira disclosed that he found it not simply to coup with the DR Congo league because it is very competitive. He says the league is on a high level compared to the of Rwandan, even the club expects a lot from the player.

    “Right now I have not discussed with any club in Rwanda, but my plan is to come back and play at home. Right now I have no agent because we also separated but will find another. I wanted to continue playing outside but things did not go well.” He added

    The first featured in AS Muhanga before joining APR FC where he discovered his form than later joined AS Kigali. Sources have revealed that he tall striker is likely to return to APR FC, but he rejects the claims of having talks with any club yet.

    Other than Sugira, AS Vita club is reported to have released ten other players including former Amavubi striker Daddy Birori who was banned by Confederation of Africa Football body for using dual nationality an incident the led to banning Rwanda out of the continental game for a year.

  • Mpayimana vows to return in 2024, if defeated

    {Independent president aspirant Phillipe Myapiyamana has vowed to return for the 2024 Presidential campaigns if he does not win the 2017 elections.}

    After voting on Friday during the 2017 Presidential elections from Camp Kigali Primary School in Nyarugenge, independent candidate Mpayimana promised to return if he does not win the 2017 elections.

    “I was happy with the way the Rwandan elections were structured, I will accept the outcome of the elections results but then I will have to come back in 2024 if am defeated.”

    He noted that even in 2024, he will have the right to stand as a candidate.

    “If I lose, I will keep my promise to the people of Rwanda that I will not return to France where I have spent 14 years. I was surprised with the organization of the elections in Rwanda, it was the first time I have voted”

    He further said that he was excited to see the citizens very happy jubilating and dancing across the country during the election campaigns.

    “I don’t have any doubt, I believe the elections will be free and fair. The outcome will be fair. I have over 100 independent observers countrywide who will inform me about the outcome. I am confident I will win by 50%, I will share the votes with the other candidates.”

    Mpayimana further went to express his gratitude to the security organs because he did not face any security hitches during the elections campaigns.

  • COMESA observers commend elaborate security before and elections

    {The head of the electoral observatory mission of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Bishop Mary Nkosi has said that they have not encountered any security related issues and that security organs have since been operating and enabling smooth campaigns. }

    The 15-member COMESA observers are in Rwanda since July 30 to monitor today’s presidential elections.

    Speaking during a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, yesterday, Bishop Nkosi said: “From the time we arrived in Rwanda, we have been following campaigns of the three candidates, and so far, security is very elaborate.”

    “We have not encountered any issue and looking forward to safe and secure elections,” said Nkosi.

    “The efficiency level at which the police has been operating is an indication that the security plan is well drawn out.”

    IGP Gasana briefed the COMESA delegation about the security preparations before, during and after elections.

    The Police Chief explained that the force works closely with all parties involved in the elections, including the National Electoral Commission as well as other security organs to ensure that Rwandans cast their votes in a calm and secure environment.

    “Together with NEC, we have established effective coordination mechanisms for close follow up on compliance with the rules and regulations governing elections,” he said.

    The IGP emphasized that well-equipped police officers have been deployed at all 2341 polling centers to ensure security and safety of the electorate before during and after the elections.

    He further said that RNP also provided escort services and guarding of all electoral materials right from NEC headquarters to the polling centers.

    He assured observers that all is set for smooth and safe elections.

    Presidential campaigns ended on August 2, with all candidates commanding security organs for ensuring that their rallies are conducted in a secure environment and incident-free.

  • Rusizi residents decry rampant theft cases

    {Residents of Rusizi, in the Western Province, have decried the high rate of robbery attacks in the area, describing the situation as “worrisome.” }

    Some of the residents who spoke to IGIHE have said the community has been living in fear owing to incessant thieves and pickpockets, and now have called those concerned at the district level to find a solution to the problem. They also claim security personnel seize but release the culprits.

    Residents have also claimed that the robbers target phones and women hand bags. Joel Irambona, a resident, says; “Just recently, I was surrounded by four people, who later confronted me to forceful give them four thousand francs.”

    “Then after a few days, a lady’s hand bag was robbed. The problem is that we see the crimes happening but nothing is being done,” he said.

    Salomon Nzabamwita, another resident said they get hold of the thieves, hand them to police but later they’re let free and later come back to torment their accusers.
    Frederic Harerimana, a district official, rejected the claims of releasing them saying that if it can’t be proved with evidence that they’re robbers they can’t be sentenced.

    “We can’t say that the law enforcers release them, those who are rounded up and suspected are handed over to security but it does not necessarily mean if they’re guilty.”

    He further requested the residents or community leaders to work together with the security officers especially Police to gey the situation under control.

  • We shall accept poll results if the voting process is fair, says Frank Habineza

    {After casting his vote at Kimironko II polling station, opposition Democratic Green Party of Rwanda candidate Frank Habineza has said that the voting process is going well, and he is confident of winning the elections if the results are free and fair.}

    Speaking to the journalists at 8 a.m on Friday after casting his vote, Dr. Habineza who was accompanied by his wife said that Rwanda has taken another step in as far as democracy is concerned.

    “We believe we’re going to win, there is a lot of support, there is a lot of enthusiasm people want to see change because they want to see a new leader after 24 years. As a Democratic party, if the elections are free and fair we shall accept the results.”

    “We are now building a foundation, in that even the next generation can continue from there. It’s the first time an opposition political party candidate has gone on the ballot paper. It is a positive milestone to start building a foundation so as to move forward and we optimistic to win the election this year.”

    The 41-year old said that campaigns were peaceful though they began with some challenges faced by the 500 Green Party election observers who were sent to different parts of the country. They’re not allowed to do their task as planned.

    “In many areas, they were denied the opportunity to enter to do their job, for instance in Nyarugenge, Gasabo, Kayonza, Nyaruguru and the Musanze but we’re in talks with the Electoral Comission President.”

    “The challenges have a bit reduced, they’re saying that the legitimate letters we gave to our observers were photocopies. I am the one who signed that letter, we couldn’t sign 500 papers, we photocopied them. My signature and the stamp for the party is there they should leave our people to follow up.”

    Habineza said that Democratic Green Party sent three people to each of the polling stations, to make a follow up on the voting process.

    There are 2,000 observers both local and international in this year’s elections, at least 200 journalists both from local and international media houses. Habineza is in the presidential race with the incumbent President Paul Kagame, and the independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana.

    The National Electoral Commission is set to announce preliminary results tonight at 11p.m.
