  • Police urges public against child abuse

    {Rwanda National Police (RNP) has strongly condemned acts of child abuse, including cases of infanticide – and called on the public to protect children from such inhuman acts.}

    Although cases of infanticide are rare, Police reminds that they are punishable with a life sentence under article 143 of the penal code.

    The reminder comes in the wake of a case in Nyanza District where a mother allegedly poisoned and killed her two-year son as a result of misunderstandings with her husband.

    The suspect, Jacqueline Tuyisenge who is currently in Police custody, claims her husband had always tormented her saying he was not the biological father and she decided to poison the boy, apparently to please the husband.

    The incident happened on the night of August 5, in Kibirizi cell of Nyagisozi sector.
    Tuyisenge is currently held at Nyagisozi police station while the body was taken to the hospital for postmortem.

    Reacting to the incident, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police, Emmanuel Kayigi, said “this is wild and inhuman act…it’s the worst crime committed against a child which shouldn’t be tolerated.”

    “There is no excuse for infanticide. It is simply evil, intolerable and an inhuman criminal act punishable by life in prison.”

    “We should not let children fall victims of any misunderstandings. There are several ways through which young mothers can be helped through advice and seeking help. If there are signs of violence in a family, we urge neighbors to always report that immediately to prevent such acts,” IP Kayigi said.

  • Suspected drug dealers arrested with 8000 pellets of cannabis

    {Police in Musanze District is holding two women suspected of drug trafficking after they were caught with over 8000 rolls of cannabis.}

    The suspects identified as Jeannette Uwinema and Sabine Itekirakoze were arrested recently in a police operation conducted in Muhoza sector, Cyabararika cell.

    They are currently being held at Muhoza police station pending further investigations.
    According to the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, the arrest came after a tip-off from a resident, who had seen the duo with the drugs.

    Gasasira urged the public to continue partnering with security organs through provision of timely information to ensure protection of communities against psychotropic substances.

    Constant operations and sensitizations have been conducted by RNP and its partners in crime prevention to end drug trafficking and abuse especially among border communities.

    “To overcome this challenge, dealers in narcotics must be brought to justice, but we should recognize and encourage the wider role that partnership between Police and the general public continues to play in reducing the impact of this scourge on our communities,” he added.

    RNP continuously engages in breaking the supply chain of narcotics by mapping-out individuals and groups as well as routes used to traffic drugs, which has led to the arrest of several dealers, most of whom have been prosecuted and sentenced while the substances seized are destroyed.

    Article 594 of the penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
