  • E-waste recycling facility goes under management of private investor

    The decision to let the plant go under management of private investor was taken by the recent cabinet meeting. The decision aims at making the plant more profitable and equipping Rwandans with skills in e-waste recycling.

    The signing ceremony took place yesterday between the Minister of Trade and Industry, Vincent Munyeshyaka and the Chief Executive Officer of Enviroserve, Stuart Fleming.

    Speaking in the ceremony, Munyeshyaka said that he is optimistic that the investor will help the government recover $1.5 million (Rwf1.26 billion) that was invested in the plant back in 2014.

    He said that they have agreed on capacity building through different training programmes that will be offered to Rwandans.

    Also the contract includes expanding the plant in infrastructures and machinery which will become the government property after ten years.

    “Beside that there are financial profits as they will sell materials they will be producing. We have agreed that in those ten years he will be paying us 10 percent of money he will gain,” he said.

    Enviroserve CEO, Fleming said that Rwanda continues to promote economy which preserves environment by establishing such a leading plant in Africa.

    “E-waste is a matter of concern worldwide; this plant is a commendable achievement,” he said.

    He said that they have conducted a feasibility study on how implementation will be conducted, and they are optimistic that e-waste will be turned into profitable investment.

    According to Minister Munyeshyaka, in past years when the plant was under management of the government, they produced different materials which are being used in industries. He said they also recycled computers which are being used in Rwandan schools.

  • Kagame urges Africans to take a lead in seeking solutions for own problems

    Kagame was speaking in a ‘Peace-building in Africa discussion’ in line with World Economic Forum (WEF) that is taking place in Davos, Switzerland.

    The discussion attracted President Alpha Condé of Guinea, Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Somalia Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre, President of World Economic Forum Børge Brende, Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Former USA secretary of state, John Kerry.

    On Rwanda’s vision and perspective to peace-building in Africa, Kagame said that there’s no miracle performed.

    “We tried to own our problems and we understood that local ownership is very important to us as Rwandans,” he said.

    “You cannot import solutions from outside and impose them on people and expect them to work. It cannot. I’m speaking from experience,” he said adding that Rwandans owned own problems and kept mind opened to others.

    “But there is absolutely need to own the process,” he said.

    The Head of State said that People were telling Rwandans that they needed to divide the country into different states but, however they laughed it off.

    “We told them we are having a conversation as Rwandans so who and how are you telling us what to do?,” he said.

    Kagame said that Rwanda has seen much progress over the years, adding that “it is still very important to own our challenges, look for real solutions and build our capacity,”

    Kagame also attended an Africa Agricultural Transformation Scorecard roundtable discussion that was co-chaired by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Bill Gates, founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

  • New UR’s school of Architecture premises set for launch

    Speaking to IGIHE, the head of Communication in UR, Mike Karangwa said that not later than 30th this month, UR will have received the premises.

    “The construction firm will hand to us the premises and students start using them. It has capacity of accommodating a big number of students, about 400, with 13 with lecture rooms, studios and offices,” he said.

    Construction works started back in 2015. The premises’ master plan was developed by French Architect Patrick Schweitzer.

    Speaking to France based media house, France Bleu recently, Schweitzer said that he borrowed the inspiration of the master plan from Volcanoes located in the Northern region of Rwanda.

    “The idea was to construct a building which has lessons. We started from things available locally as a way to encourage students who will study there love local things,” he said.

    The school was constructed using materials available locally including volcanic rocks locally known as ‘amakoro’. Over 350 got jobs during the construction activities.

  • President Kagame to meet Trump

    On Friday, the day Trump is to address the World Economic Forum, he will also meet President Kagame for talks on trade and reaffirming the US-Africa relationship.

    Trump is set to speak Friday at the World Economic Forum, an annual gathering of the global pro-trade elite at the Swiss ski resort, in a move that has raised eyebrows because of his protectionist “America First” policies.

    “We’re going to the World Economic Forum to share President Trump’s economic story and to tell the world that America is open for business,” said Trump’s chief economic adviser Gary Cohn.

  • Over 200 Rwandan refugees repatriate after Cessation clause

    The Government of Rwanda called on Rwandan refugees from different countries around the World to repatriate voluntarily or seek official documents to stay in host countries as residents.

    Speaking to IGIHE yesterday, the Director of Refugee in MIDIMAR, Jean Claude Rwahama said that though people who have repatriated are few, the government of Rwanda has done all that is necessary to facilitate them during the exercise.

    “What we were supposed to do was done. As we have said, our responsibility is to welcome them,” he said.

    However, Rwahama said that they are not aware whether those yet to repatriate have sought official documents enabling them to stay in host countries, “none informed us, but it might be possible that they seek them through our embassies in different countries,”

    On the other hand, some countries are still reluctant to implement the move, like Uganda which recently announced that they cannot remove refugee status for Rwandan refugees as they still receive others who flee from there.

    According to MIDIMAR, cessation closure will affect a total of 16,000 Rwandan refugees from different countries.

    Statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) shows that over 3.5 million Rwandans have repatriated to the country since 1994.

  • RURA authorizes acquisition of Tigo Rwanda Ltd by Airtel

    This decision effectively approves the agreement which had been reached between Millicom Group and Bharti Airtel Group, subject to the approval by RURA Board.

    The consolidation of the two operators (Airtel and Tigo) is expected to bring industry stability, improved quality of services and product innovation for the benefit of the consumers.

    This acquisition shall not affect the existing subscribers of TIGO Rwanda. They will continue to be served, seamlessly, during and after the consolidation. Subscribers will not be required to change their existing TIGO telephone numbers and existing TIGO cash services will not be affected. It is the primary responsibility of the Regulatory Authority to protect the consumers during this process.

  • Rwandans in the USA mark the New Year

    The ambassador made the remarks on Saturday at the New Year 2018 celebration hosted by the embassy at Sheraton Hotel, Silver Spring, Maryland.

    The party attracted about 150 members of the Rwandan Diaspora community from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, just the Tri-State closest to the embassy location.

    Amb. Mukantabana thanked the Diaspora for their efforts in staying connected to Rwanda and for actively engaging in activities that help in the development of Rwanda.

    Participants also watched the 2018 New Year message from President Paul Kagame.

    Amongst many other projects in 2017, the Rwandan Diaspora in the U.S. contributed Rwf11 million in the Community-based Health Scheme, commonly known as Mutuelle de Santé, to help the neediest Rwandans in the country.

    Amb. Mukantabana encouraged them to set even higher ambitions for the year 2018 and assured them of the government’s support whenever necessary.

    During the party, children were also entertained through various activities to accustom them to their Rwandan roots.

    Those present enjoyed a meal and traditional dancing together.

    The party is held annually bringing together the community and the embassy to kick off the New Year with renewed strength and will to serve the nation and keep showcasing Rwanda’s image in the world’s first economy, USA.

  • Pomp as Rwandans welcome cyclist star Areruya

    Players landed at the airport at 3:40pm and received by thousands of people from all corners of the country in what revelers dubbed ‘hero’s welcome’.

    The champion Areruya and colleagues returned home after making history of winning the top African Cycling competition ‘La Tropicale Amissa Bongo 2018’ title, the competition that took place in Gabon last week.

    Areruya participated in the competition with five colleagues namely: Valens Ndayisenga, Bonaventure Uwizeyimana, Didier Munyaneza also known as Mbappé, Ukiniwabo Jean Paul René and Jean Ruberwa.

    However, Valens Ndayisenga and Bonaventure Uwizeyimana did not make it to the final after involving in an accident.

    Areruya won La Tropicale Amissa Bongo 2018 by using 23 hours 52 minutes and 24 seconds. This made him become the first Rwandan to win the title and third African.

    Team Rwanda took home Rwf20 million including other prizes they won in the competition.

  • Kagame attends World Economic Forum in Davos

    On its 48th occasion the four day meeting opened today and will be closed on 26th.
    The meeting is running under the theme ‘Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World’

    Kagame is leading a delegation comprised of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community Affairs Minister, Louise Mushikiwabo; Finance and Economic Planning Minister; Amb. Claver Gatete; Information, Technology and Communication Minister, Jean de Dieu Rurangirwa and Minister of Environment, Dr. Vincent Biruta.

    Also among the team include, the Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, Francis Gatare and the Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Development Board, Clare Akamanzi.

    The programme of the forum is built around four key objectives which are; driving economic progress, navigating a multipolar and multi-conceptual world, overcoming divisions in society and shaping the agile governance of technology.

    President Kagame and the delegation he leads will be looking to showcase investment opportunities that Rwanda offers to investors and entrepreneurs from around the World.

    According to the statement from the Office of the President, Kagame is also expected to speak at the Washington Post Foreign Policy Lunch 2018 as well as deliver the closing remarks at the Peace-building in Africa session.
