  • Police roots for a drug-free community in Rutsiro

Speaking to over 1000 students of Kabeza and Manihira secondary and primary schools respectively, the District community liaisons officer (DCLO) for Rutsiro Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Jean Bosco Mugenzi said that many drug traffickers lure young people into drug consumption as a way of recruiting them into future traffickers.

He urged them to shun away from all acts of criminality especially drug abuse which is common among young people.

He went on to tell the students that cases of unwanted pregnancies among young girls are most times related to drug consumption, lack of parental care and warned them about risks such as contracting STDs.

“The youth should take the lead in the fight against drugs.

This can be done by way of alerting them about the adverse consequences associated with abusing drugs, and reporting the adamant persons to authorities” she noted

The DCLO urged the schools’ administration to conduct regular inspections among students, collaborate with law enforcers and consult with parents about their respective roles in fighting drug abuse.

Following the meeting, students committed themselves to join in the fight against drugs and also pledged to spread the message to other students and youth within Rwandan communities.

  • I am in leadership to enable business people to do business and succeed- President Kagame

The president was presenting during a session on Digitalizing Emerging Markets with AliBaba Group Executive Chairman, Jack Ma on the Second day of the World Economic Forum 2019.

“In most of what we do, there is a need for sustainability and predictability,” Kagame told the Davos 2019 audience. “We have to do what we have to do and believe it works.”

Alibaba Group and the government of Rwanda have agreed to multiple bilateral initiatives to promote Rwanda’s economy through increased cross-border trade, capacity building, and others. Among the agreements is the Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), an initiative for public-private dialogue to foster a more effective and efficient policy and business environment for cross border electronic trade (eTrade) development.

At that, President Kagame noted that the platform is a special, exciting partnership bringing together marginalized people in society to connect directly with the consumers.

“eWTP has democratized benefits. If you look at the number of people who will benefit; young entrepreneurs and farmers who are involved in coffee businesses, it is all inclusive”
Alibaba Group Executive Chairman, Jack Ma, echoed his remarks, observing that the initiative is a pioneering methodology for Globalization.

“We believe in globalization, but many don’t believe in it because it is not inclusive. How can we improve it? In the last 20 years, globalization was controlled by 60,000 companies worldwide, imagine if we could expand that to 60 million businesses.” Ma said
According to Jack Ma, eWTP is about the “Four T’s”: Training, Trade, Technology, and Tourism.

The Electronic World Trade Platform is a private sector driven initiative and will be implemented in other countries after its debut in Rwanda. “We want to convince countries where the government has the wisdom and the courage to support small business… that’s the vision.”

At date, farmers in Rwanda are already selling coffee directly through the platform, which facilitates tariff-free trade for transactions of less than US$1 million. Coffee is already being sold through this platform to Chinese customers, farmers were getting around $8 dollars per kilogram, they are now getting $12 per kilogram.

  • Smaller, lighter ‘Uber Lite’ launched in South Africa

Designed to make booking rides easier in low connectivity and slower than average internet speeds, Uber Lite, will be rolled out in South Africa today.

The new application retains the core functionality of the current app, and includes critical safety features – but it works faster in low connectivity areas, and for people with limited data plans. It will be ten times smaller than the current app at just 5MB – roughly the size of three selfies.

According to Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, the introduction of lighter Uber App responds to the South African market and other key markets around the world.

“Every day, hundreds of thousands of South Africans rely on Uber for mobility and work, and we understand that a one-size-fits-all app doesn’t work for the diversity of network conditions, devices, and rider needs across the country,” said Alon Lits, GM for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa.

“After extensive research with our riders, it was obvious we couldn’t just make a smaller copy of Uber. We needed to reimagine the experience for South Africa and key markets around the world. The result is Uber Lite. A completely redesigned app that is light, simple, and works on any Android device and on any network.” He added

Uber Lite was first rolled out in over 600 cities in India in 2018.

“As part of our vision of delivering a bold, new Digital World to our customers, the iFest is intended to take the digital experience and access to the Internet closer to the people. We will be educating the masses on the benefits of the Internet, showcasing MTN’s wide product and service portfolio as well as offer data-enabled devices at the most affordable prices.”

Activities to be undertaken during the iFest include, market storms and activations, campus activations and data clinics across Rwanda, among others.

In line with delivering a seamless user experience, MTN has introduced a self-service IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system that will offer Data Tips 24/7. This will be accessed by dialing 200. The IVR is to ensure that MTN subscribers are educated on how they access the Internet, use MTN Data and solve issues all on their own.

The recent introduction of MyMTN App, an all-in-one, self-care tool enabling MTN customers to self-serve and engage with customer service online and everywhere they go, is also proof of MTN’s continued commitment in exploring innovative ways to deliver personalized and valuable experiences to its customers.

As part of its customer-centric approach, MTN recently dropped its mobile out-of-bundle internet price to Frw10/MB from Frw56/MB, making it the lowest out-of-bundle rate in Rwanda.

“Although we continue to see a growth of data subscribers on our network, there are many Rwandans who are yet to experience the benefits of the internet. We want to create awareness of the vast opportunities available to them with MTN Data” added Acheampong.

In 2018, MTN invested $20 million on Modernizing and Transforming the network that has so far enhanced 3G coverage, data volume and improved data speeds across the country using the 900 MHz spectrum. Modernizing the network with future proof technology is to accommodate the increasing number of smartphone users and meet the demand of new services and applications.

“People’s data consumption patterns are changing rapidly and MTN is constantly looking for innovative ways to ensure that our customers’ needs are met,” concluded Acheampong.
The launch of the MTN iFest is backed by a high-impact, multi-channel marketing strategy that includes a combination of market-specific print, digital, outdoor and mobile creative executions featuring local actor and comedian popularly known as Clapton ‘Kibonge’.

  • Kagame envisages a progressive Africa as WEF opens in Davos

President Kagame was speaking to over 65 Heads of State and Government and top global executives for this year’s World Economic Forum [WEF] 2019 held in Davos, Switzerland, under the theme Globalization, “Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”.

“This session is timely. The conditions have never been so favorable for Africa to take the lead in shaping its own global agenda. For too long, we ceded responsibility for Africa’s agenda to others, with some individuals even benefiting,” Kagame said, opening the Forum.

President Kagame further remarked that everyone benefits from a stronger, more united Africa, which is reflected in the more constructive tone of Africa’s partnerships with China, Europe, and others.

He cautioned that challenges relating to migration, security and climate change among others imply that there is no longer any actor who sees an advantage in an Africa that is institutionally weak and economically stagnant. However, he noted that at present, the pace and quality of integration in Africa were increasing noticeably, a very significant, according to the AU Chairman.

“Last year, for example, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement was adopted and it is likely to come into force this year. We also agreed on a timetable for the free movement of people and on the establishment of a single African air transport market.” President Kagame added.

The Head of the State, later on, participated in a session on digitalizing Emerging Markets with the AliBaba Group Executive Chairman, Jack Ma.

Last Year, in October, Alibaba Group and the government of Rwanda agreed to multiple bilateral initiatives, aiming to promote the African country’s economy through increased cross-border trade, capacity building, and tourism. A major tenet of the agreements was Rwanda’s admission to the eWTP, Electronic World Trade Platform, becoming the first eWTP Partner in Africa so far.

On why Rwanda signed up to the Platform, President Kagame said it was a special, exciting partnership that brings marginalized people in society to connect directly with the consumers.

“eWTP has democratized benefits. If you look at the number of people who will benefit; young entrepreneurs and farmers who are involved in coffee businesses, it is all inclusive.” He explained.

African leaders are currently showcasing the continent’s diverse opportunities to investors, business leaders and policymakers at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

  • Rubagantare; a herbal cocktail that beats amoeba

She took it for some time, and a few days later started feeling like never before.

Since then, she has never suffered from amebiasis or tested positive for the infection.

“When I was still a small child my mother used to seek medicines for my condition. Now, I am 41 years old. Ever since I took Rubagantare, I have been feeling very well and have no traces of the infection,” she says.

Murera further says that when she was healed by Rubagantare she immediately realized that no one should despise herbal products made by Rwandans because they also have the power to cure diseases.

Emmanuel Kageruka who also used this product confirms that he knew of Rubagantare after suffering from gut pains. He says he knew of his illness when he was tested positive for amebiasis.

“Ever since I took this herbal medicine, I have not suffered from amebiasis for three years,” he said.
Samuel Semahame Nyakarundi, expert in general health and Director of Zirumuze Cooperative put efforts in conducting a research that enabled him to discover “Rubagantare” an effective remedy for the infection in 2008.
Nyakarundi says it possesses the power to eradicate amebiasis and its kystes.

“Rubagantare is made from five types of herbs. Apart from curing amebiasis, the product also treats other intestinal worms. It also reduces intensity of other conditions including hypertension, because it reduces bodily fats,”

Nyakarundi says that he is, however, concerned about counterfeits which may cause discrediting of the herbal. He asks them to stop it because it is illegal.

He says Zirumuze Cooperative, producers of the herb, is in Kigali on the road to La fraicheur near former Muhima textile market, Nyabugogo opposite WASAC and Musanze food commodities market in room number 69 as well as in Rubavu car station in room 14.
