  • Zimbabwe to open embassy with residence in Kigali

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe has told IGIHE that preparations are underway for Zimbabwe embassy to open in the near future.

He explained that the opening of the new embassy reflects Rwanda’s ambitions to promote relations with African countries.

“ The gesture demonstrates improved relations with African countries because we have opened many embassies specifically in Southern Africa,” observed Nduhungirehe.

Nduhungirehe said the opening of Zimbabwe embassy to Rwanda is also an opportunity to promote inter-trade and cooperation as well as Rwandan community in the country.

Last year, Rwanda opened embassy in Zimbabwe whereafter Amb James Musoni presented letters of credence to represent Rwanda in Zimbawe to President, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in January 2019.

In April 2017, Rwanda’s National Carrier , RwandAir launched flights to Harare, Zimbabwe.

  • Top African business leaders tour Rwanda’s development projects

Made-In-Africa Leadership Conference (MLC) is an exclusive annual gathering of African business owners and business leaders, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Managing Directors (MDs) of mid-sized companies.

The leaders attending the conference held on 6th to 7th June 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda convened to learn from each other, inspire each other to greater leadership performance, and network with each other. They also discussed on measures to Promote Made in Africa.

The continental conference is the first of its kind and is organized by Breakfast Club Africa, a Pan African CEO membership organization, formed with a singular purpose of helping leaders of companies to become better leaders, thus benefiting their organizations and employees.

Talks held during the conference revolved around seeking together solutions addressing problems affecting small and medium-sized firms.

After attending the conference , participants toured development projects located in Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kigali city.

Special Economic Zone is home to renown manufacturing plants including C&H Garment, Africa Improved Food, Pharma Lab producing medicines and Safintra manufacturing roofing sheets among others.

After receiving explanation on activities carried out in SEZ, the leaders also visited different companies operating in Rwanda like telecommunication company Airtel Rwanda, Volkswagen, DMM Hehe, Kigali Innovation City and Carnegie Mellon University Africa branch among others.

They were also taken through challenges facing these institutions and discussed possible solutions.

  • Dr Karusisi urges Africa’s women on self-confidence to unleash their potential

Dr Karusisi who was speaking to 100 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of medium sized and large institutions from Africa attending ‘Made In Africa Leadership Conference’ held in Kigali to seek ways of promoting Made in Africa, explained that women are in most cases involved in leadership of medium enterprises noting that women presence is lacking in decision making positions in large enterprises.

She however observed that women and girls fear to take responsibilities even when they are assigned in such positions.

“We are often the first root causes of such exclusion because we don’t have self-confidence. We have inner feelings pushing us not to expose ourselves wondering what people shall think about you. They will consider me arrogant, …And this restrains you from raising hand to express an idea,” noted Dr Karusisi.
    .
The conference was held for the first time on 6th June 2019 and was organized by Breakfast Club Africa.

Breakfast Club Africa is a Pan African CEO membership organization, formed with a purpose of helping leaders of companies to become better leaders, thus benefiting their organizations and employees.

The second day of the conference attracted different panelists including Dr Karusisi who shared insights on challenges and opportunities for African woman.

Results from a survey conducted by Rwanda Cooperative Agency (RCA) in 2016 indicated that only 39.5% women among citizens who have accounts at financial institutions. The report also indicated that 68.9% of men have acquired loans while only 26.8% women got loans.

“ I don’t know the essence of this but the issue exists. I remember when I worked at the office of the presidency, he often asked me to share ideas and I would share good ideas. But I had inner feelings that I have nothing to say , like something is obstructing me to stand and share an idea,” she added.

Dr Karusisi explained that 23% of girls drop out from primary schools while the boys are 19%. Female teens dropping out of school are 36% and 32% for boys.

Dr Karusisi emphacized that giving girls opportunities to decision making positions should start with setting up policies enhancing their access to education.

Lusubilo Chakaniza, the CEO of Ethanol Company Ltd from Malawi was among the discussants.

He said that girls lack confidence amidst bareers restricting them to particular opportunities.

The Managing Director of BPR Atlas Mara, Maurice K. Toroitich pointed out an example of previous graduation ceremony he attended where girls were best performers noting that girls can execute their duties articulately if they are given opportunities.

“We have to understand that being a girl doesn’t mean you are not able to perform like boys,” he said.

Rwanda is among countries promoting gender balance in top government positions. The 2003 Constitution as amended to date stipulates that women should have at least 30% representation in decision making positions.

Dr Karusisi said that women presence is lacking in decision making positions in large enterprises.

KIM shall keep supporting students who survived genocide in whatever possible means to equip them with excellent education to see their future flourishing,” he noted.

  • Rwanda to ask Interpol to apprehend Burundians accused of involvement in genocide

Mutangana has revealed this as he hosted his counterpart Dr Serge Brammertz, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) on his visit to the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA).

The discussions with the Rwandan Prosecutor General and other senior members of Rwanda’s prosecution focused on areas of cooperation in genocide fugitives’ investigations and other areas of mutual interest.

Among fugitives, Mutangana, pointed out Burundians tried in Gacaca court for their involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi nearby Rwanda, Burundi border.

Genocide survivors in Southern Province have been giving testimonies pinning Burundian Hutus to have perpetrated genocide with extreme cruelty that some of them would roast and eat victims’ hearts after killing Tutsi in 1994.

Mutangana explained that pursuing these Burundians remains an issue over relenting willingness of Burundi.

“We have records of Burundians who perpetrated genocide in Rwanda and fled. However, there was no political will on the side of Burundi to facilitate investigations into Burundians who committed genocide,” he said.

“There are many Burundians who did so in Gisagara and Nyaruguru nearby Burundi border. We issued arrest warrants but never got any feedback. That is a problem,” added Mutangana.

He explained that the issue might be currently rooted political turbulence between both countries though Burundi hadn’t proven willingness before to render justice on pursuing its citizens involved in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

“We eye for Interpol support into the matter as long as the country has no willingness. The issue doesn’t only concern Burundians but also other Rwandans and foreigners staying outside Rwanda who are neither deported nor tried,” revealed Mutangana.

He emphasized that wanted Burundians are mainly based in Kayanza region nearby Rwanda’s border.

“We believe Interpol can intervene because the country has no political willingness to assist us to apprehend those suspects,” said the Prosecutor General.

Dr Brammertz highlighted that they will keep collaboration with concerned parties to bring genocide fugitives to book.

He revealed a plan to present to the United Nations Security Council, the report containing information on countries hosting genocide fugitives to be pursued.

Dr Brammertz said investigation is underway to hunt more genocide fugitives including Felicien Kabuga, Protais Mpiranya and Augustin Bizimana among others.

Rwanda Prosecutor General, Jean Bosco Mutangana has said that lack of political will on Burundi side stalls the process of rendering justice to victims killed Burundians by during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

  • APAPEC Irebero visits Kiziguro Genocide Memorial, donates cows to survivors

The memorial is home to over 14,000 genocide victims killed in former Murambi, Muhura, Gituza and Ngarama communes currently in Gatsibo district.

The management of APAPEC Irebero, a school located in Gisozi sector, Gasabo district of Kigali city revealed that the idea behind visiting the memorial was to learn from heinous killing of Tutsi in different parts of the country.

Deo Uwobahorana, the Chairman of the Board of I.S.I co Ltd, the company owning APAPEC Irebero said learning from sufferings Tutsi endured during genocide should go hand in hand with supporting vulnerable genocide survivors towards the resilience journey.

The school donated Rwf 100,000 for maintenance of Kiziguro memorial and two cows worth Rwf 1 million handed to Eric Seziki from Remera sector and Mukangagara from Rwankuba cell in Murambi sector.

Uwobahorana explained that the visit enables teachers to witness what happened during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and learn from genocide history considering their critical role in education of the youth.

He tasked teachers to teach true history and stand against genocide ideology and denials to prevent re-occurrence.

The President of IBUKA, organization umbrella of genocide survivors in Gatsibo district, Jean Nepomuscène Sibomana urged teachers to stand against fellows who propagated genocide ideology in the past and equip students with moral values striving for human dignity.

Florentine Ntakirutimana, one of the teachers at the school said the visit leaves them the task of countering whatever might lead to discrimination.

The Headmaster of APAPEC Irebero, Victor Gakwaya said the school wants teachers to learn from their country’s history to impart the right knowledge to students preparing them for a better future free of genocide ideology.

“We must learn our history. Though some of us experienced it, they must learn again to pass a good legacy to future generations paving the way for a peaceful society preventing re-occurrence of genocide,” he said.

APAPEC Irebero is a parents’ school that has gained excellency in delivering quality education since its inception in 2001. It currently has over 1100 pupils from Kindergarten and Primary school.
