  • Nyagatare: Seven-year-old boy blown up by bomb

    The unfortunate incident took place on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2020, in Rukundo Village in Kacundezi Cell in Rwimiyaga Sector. He was rushed to Bugaragara Health Center where he was transferred to Nyagatare Hospital where her died from.

    According to reports, the child found an iron object in the basement of his home and started disassemble it with anticipation of selling it as scrap.

    CIP Twizeyimana Hamdun, Rwanda National Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province told IGIHE that the child was critically injured and taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to severe injuries.

    CIP Twizeyimana urges residents to refrain from smashing iron metal they don’t know.

    The seven-year-old was critically injured in the head and legs.

  • Woman arrested over husband murder

    The death of Sezerano’s husband, Bwanacyeye Alexis, 24, was announced on the night of August 4, 2020, at around 5 pm in Rubona Village in Muganza Cell where they live.

    Executive Secretary of Runda Sector, Mwizerwa Rafiki, told IGIHE that the basic information they have shows that the couple fought first which attracted neighbors’ interventions as the fight intensified.

    Mwizerwa said the two had lived in Runda Sector for about eight months where they relocated from Kigali City.

    They have one child.

    Their identities show that the woman is from Karongi District and the man is from Huye District.

    Isezerano 26, detained at RIB Runda Station and Bwanacyeye’s body has been taken to Kacyiru Hospital for autopsy.

  • Farmers trained in using BK’s IKOFI in purchasing farm inputs

    The farmers’ training began on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, and will last for 15 days in Kigali City.

    They will be trained to remind farmers to sign up for the Smart Nkunganire program, how the vendors will be able to trade, and how to pay using the BK’s IKOFI technology. It is all about making it easier for the farmer to get fertilizer without using paper money.

    Gatabazi Egide, RAB’s Nkunganire Program Director, said that after the event, the facilitators will also train farmers from across the country, those in charge of fertilizers, cell economic development, and agricultural advisors on the village level.

    He added that while farmers are responding to this approach, it will help them to meet the needs of modern agriculture easily.

    Registration in Smart Nkunganire and payment through the BK’s IKOFI technology will help prevent Coronavirus outbreaks as there will be no money notes payments by hand and it will reduce travel costs.

    Head of Marketing and Products development at BK, Nshuti Thierry, said they have partnered with RAB in the process to keep the bank involved in the development of modern agriculture.

    Nshuti pointed out that there are many benefits to using BK’s IKOFI in buying supplements including instant access to loan facilities.

    Nshuti explains that the loan is issued immediately without requiring farmers go through the laborious process of filling forms.

    One of the trainees, Egide Ahishakiye, said that they also see it as something that will help the agricultural sector to keep pace with development.

  • COVID-19: Rwanda records 53 recoveries, 7 new cases

    The number of people who have contracted Coronavirus since the first patient was diagnosed in Rwanda on March 14, 2020, has risen to 2099 including 1222 recoveries.

    The number of current patients are 872, and five deaths.

    Of the seven new cases of COVID-19 caused by Coronavirus on August 4, 2020, 4 were from Rusizi; 2 from Kigali; while 1 from Nyamasheke.

    Since the first Coronavirus patient appeared in Rwanda, on July 27, 2020, the largest number of people recovered in one day, with about 57 cases.

    Coronavirus symptoms include coughing, flu, and difficulty breathing. It is transmitted through the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

    To avoid the spread of Coronavirus, Rwandans are required to continue to pay attention to and comply with government regulations, especially with frequent handwashing with water and soap, and wearing masks when a person leaves home or in public.

  • Ethiopian Airlines resumes flights to and from Kigali

    Ethiopian Airlines announced this a few days after Rwanda decided to reopen Kigali International Airport, after four months without receiving passenger flights due to COVID-19.

    Ethiopian Airlines said on Twitter that it was pleased to reopen its flights to Rwanda.

    “We are pleased to announce that we have resumed our flights to Kigali, #flyEthiopian #Rwanda.”

    Ethiopian Airlines’ resumption of Kigali flights came at a time when Qatar Airways had also announced it had resumed operations in Rwanda.

    In March this year, Ethiopian Airways announced it had suspended flights to 30 countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • REMA stops illegal activities on Lake Kivu

    In a message via Twitter, REMA said there were illegal activities including tourism, agriculture, and more which have been stopped henceforth.

    Law N ° 48/2018 of 13/08/2018 on the Environment states spells out environmentally damaging activities including crude disposal, pollution, hydro upset, among others.

  • Kabutare Hospital acquires Rwf59 million worth ambulance

    The management of Kabutare Hospital immediately announced that the ambulance will be operating in the Gisoro-Gisamvu hinterland as it is far from the Hospital.

    The Director-General of Kabutare Hospital, Dr. Nzambimana Jean Bosco, said that they already have six other ambulances but the additional support will help serve the most remote parts of the district. Other ambulance services are offered at Ruhashya Health Center in Rusatira and Rwaniro and the other is located at Kinyamakara Health Center in Simbi and Maraba.

    Huye District Administration  donated an ambulance worth Rwf59 million to Kabutare Hospital that will be used to improve health services.
    The Director-General of Kabutare Hospital, Dr. Nzambimana Jean Bosco, said that these   additional ambulances support will help serve the most remote parts of the district.
  • Panic as six Rwamagana residents suffer suspected scorpion bites

    They are small insects that look like scorpions and the doctors who spoke to IGIHE say they are.

    They are insects that have been around for a month and found in homes in Akamata Village in Cyanya Cell in Kigabiro Sector. The three who were bitten sought medical attention from a doctor, hospitalized, and it was found necessary to put them on drip. The other three did not go to the hospital but used traditional medicine.

    Some residents interviewed by IGIHE described how they were bitten by this insect. Mukeshimana Sauda said she was bitten on Thursday last week on the breast and knee.

    Izerimana Safinah said she was bitten while she was preparing children’s shoes.
    Izerimana added that apart from her, she even took her child in the hospital for medical treatment. She said these insects are so common in her home that she is worried they will continue to bite them.

    Kamatare village leader, Ntwari Janvier Musa, said that he had also been told by various residents for a month that they saw the scorpion-like insects in their homes, and that he had recently killed them at his home. He advises they should not delay but find pesticides to kill them.

    The mayor of Rwamagana District, Mbonyumuvunyi Radjab, said they were aware that there were scorpion-like insects that had already bitten six people but they would not confirm that they are scorpions because they usually live in the desert.

    He is urging the public that anyone who would be bitten should go to the doctor as soon as possible while they are working with the health authorities to find a definitive solution.

    Dr. Nsengiyumva Jean Beranrd, a specialist in emergency medicine for potentially fatal diseases, who works at CHUB Hospital, told IGIHE that there are 1,500 species of scorpion in the world. At least 20 are the most poisonous including those who can bite a person and have disabilities in the joint.

    Dr. Nsengiyumva called on the public not to be intimidated since most of the scorpions in Rwanda do not have dangerous venom. He, however, urged against use of herbs to treat the bites as this may cause health risks.

    Although the toxicity of scorpions in Rwanda may not cause serious problems, Dr. Nsengiyumva says their bite can cause tetanus and other diseases.

    Regis Rugemanshuro, director-general of Cimerwa Plc, said that going to the stock market is an opportunity for investors who want to invest in the company.

    He said Cimerwa’s ambitions to become a major factory would not be achieved without going to the stock market.

    The Executive director of Rwanda Development Board, Clare Akamanzi, said Cimerwa is a good example of a company committed to promoting the ‘Made in Rwanda’ program.

    She said other Rwandan companies should learn from Cimerwa, and go to the stock market to expand.

    Cimerwa Plc has a total of 703,219,520 shares, of which 344,575,560 shares (49%) are floated..

    A 49% stake in Cimerwa will be put on the market owned by the Agaciro Development Fund representing the Government of Rwanda, the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB), Rwanda Investment Group (RIG), and Sonarwa Holdings Ltd.

    Cimerwa has put the shares on the market when it needs to provide cement to build 22,000 classrooms across the country in less than three months.

    When the company goes to the stock market, it’s given a tax holiday on capital gains for five years, which varies depending on the shares sold and can reach 20%.

    There are currently nine companies on the Rwandan stock market; Crystal Telecom, Bralirwa, Uchumi Super Market Ltd, National Media Group, Bank of Kigali, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Equity Bank Group Ltd, I&M Bank Rwanda, and RH Bophelo Limited recently joined.

  • Stern action taken against Covid-19 prevention guidelines violators

    The number of bars closed between the said dates is 1687, vehicles seized 2705, the number of arrests in bars is 6,234, those who did not comply with the distance of one meter are 12,001, and those who travel after 9 pm are 23,401.

    Minaloc figures show that in Kigali City, those punished of non-compliance with Coronavirus safety regulations included four village leaders, 276 closed bars, 477 vehicles seized, 966 arrests in bars, 442 non-compliance, those caught after 9 p.m. was 3,280, and those who did not wear masks were 1265.

    In the Northern Province those punished include, 4 village and community leaders, 322 bars were closed, 555 vehicles were seized, 1379 people were arrested in bars, 3716 didn’t comply with the social distance, 4683 people moving after pm, and 6797 didn’t wear masks.

    In the Southern Province those punished includes, 12 village and community leaders, 446 bars were closed, 684 vehicles were seized, 1517 people were arrested in bars, 3,836 non-compliant of social distance, 5,554 moving after 3: pm, and 8111 without masks.

    In the Eastern Province punished includes, three village and community leaders, 186 bars were closed, 703 vehicles were seized, 831 people were arrested in bars, 1521 people did not comply with the one-meter distance, 1521 people moving after 9:00 pm, 3654 moving without masks.

    In the Western Province those punished included, 2 village and community leaders, 457 bars were closed, 286 vehicles were seized, 1541 people were arrested in bars, 2486 non-compliant with social distance, 4169 people walked after 3 pm, and 7230 didn’t wear masks.

    The Ministry of Health recently announced that there has been an increase in the number of people infected with the Coronavirus in the past two weeks, and analysis has revealed that most are between the ages of 20 and 49, as they don’t comply with the prevention guidelines.

    In the third week of last month, Minister of local government, Prof. Anastase Shyaka said that to help the police to better enforce the Coronavirus prevention guidelines, local authorities have started new cooperation in fighting those who don’t comply with the prevention guidelines of the pandemic.
