  • Greece launches new state-run broadcaster

    Greece has launched a new public television channel, EDT, more than two months after the abrupt closure of the state broadcaster ERT.

    Some of the 2,700 fired staff have been continuing to produce programmes from their old offices. Europe’s association of public broadcasters pulled the plug on Wednesday on transmissions by the sacked workers.

    The Geneva-based European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said it will stop relaying their programmes to viewers, leaving ERT only available online.

    Greece’s conservative-led government cited the need to cut costs due to the country’s severe financial crisis for its decision to abruptly close ERT on June 11.

    The ensuing international outcry led to a severe political crisis that saw a small left-wing party withdrawing from the country’s fragile three-party governing coalition, leaving the government with a tiny majority in Parliament.

    The fired workers have been producing round-the-clock programming for more than two months from ERT’s headquarters, which they have taken over, in defiance of the government shutdown.

  • Egypt’s Mubarak Retrial Begins

    {{The former Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, has appeared in court, three days after being released from prison and placed under house arrest.}}

    Mr Mubarak is facing a retrial on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising.

    He sat in the defendants’ cage along with his two sons, former interior minister, and six security chiefs.

    Earlier, the separate trial of the Muslim Brotherhood’s general guide and his two deputies was adjourned.

    The court convened briefly and made its decision because Mohammed Badie, Khairat al-Shater and Rashad Bayoumi and 32 other defendants were absent for security reasons.

    Their presence was requested for the trial’s resumption on 29 October.

  • India Gang Rape: Five Suspects Arrested

    {{All five men wanted over the gang rape of a 22-year-old photo journalist in the Indian city of Mumbai on Thursday have been arrested.}}

    The last suspect was arrested in the capital, Delhi, on Sunday, and is being brought back to Mumbai, police said.

    The woman was attacked at an abandoned textile mill in the centre of the city, where she was on a photo assignment with a male colleague at the time.

    The case has renewed public outrage over sexual violence in India.

    A 19-year-old unemployed man from south Mumbai was first arrested on Friday, and police made another two arrests on Saturday.

    The female victim, who is in hospital with multiple injuries, has said she is anxious to return to work after the attack.

    “Rape is not the end of life. I want the strictest punishment for all the accused,” she said.

    An intern with a Mumbai-based English magazine, she had gone to the Shakti Mills – a former textile mill that now lies abandoned and in ruins – with a male colleague for a photo shoot when the attack happened.

    Her colleague was beaten during the assault.

    There were nationwide protests last December following the gang-rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus in the capital, Delhi. She later died from her injuries.

    The case led to the introduction of tougher laws against sexual violence, but many are asking whether these have had any effect.

  • South Africa says Mandela showing ‘great resilience’, still critical

    {{Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who has been in hospital since early June with a lung infection, is showing “great resilience” although he remains in a critical but stable condition, the presidency said on Saturday.}}

    “While at times, his condition becomes unstable, the doctors indicate that the former president has demonstrated great resilience and his condition tends to stabilize as a result of medical interventions,” it said in its latest update on the condition of the 95-year-old anti-apartheid hero.

    “Doctors are still working hard to effect a turnaround and a further improvement in his health and to keep the former president comfortable,” the presidency added in the statement.

    It was the first update in almost two weeks on the health of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. News of his hospitalization in June with a recurring lung infection attracted worldwide attention for the revered statesman, who is admired as a symbol of struggle against injustice and of racial reconciliation.

    Mandela celebrated his 95th birthday in hospital on July 18, showered with tributes from around the world.

    He spent nearly three decades in prison before being released and being elected South Africa’s first black president in multi-racial elections in 1994 that ended apartheid rule.

    Mandela’s 27 years in prison under white minority rule included 18 years on the notorious Robben Island penal colony. His lung infection dates back to his time, when he and other prisoners were forced to work in a limestone quarry.

    South Africa’s current president Jacob Zuma will fly to Malaysia on Saturday on an official visit where he will receive a global peace award on behalf of former president Mandela.

  • Macedonian PM threatens early election over political deadlock

    {{Macedonia’s prime minister threatened on Saturday to call a snap election unless the main opposition party did more to resolve a political deadlock that is damaging its European Union membership prospects.}}

    Nikola Gruevski said the prospect of opening EU entry talks could be withdrawn if the conservative government and the centre-left Social Democrats failed to produce an agreed report on an incident last December when opposition legislators were thrown out for brawling.

    A joint government-opposition commission, formed under EU pressure, said on Friday it was unable to agree on what had happened in the incident, when police evicted journalists and opposition deputies during parliament’s budget debate.

    Gruevski told the Social Democrats that if they did not help by Sunday to adopt the report requested by the EU, he would call a snap election to try to maintain Macedonia’s standing in Brussels.

    “The second option is to convene parliament on Monday and vote to disband it and call an early election for October,” he told a news conference. He said he had enough support in parliament to win the vote.

    EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule said in February that failure to resolve the dispute was putting at risk an opportunity for Macedonia to clinch the start of membership talks.

  • Obama Studies Options After Syria Gas Attack, Consults UK’s Cameron

    {{President Barack Obama and his top military and national security advisers hashed out options on Saturday for responding to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria amid “increasing signs” that the government used poison gas against civilians.}}

    Obama spoke with British Prime Minister David Cameron, a top U.S. ally, and agreed that chemical weapon use by Syrian President Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces would merit a “serious response,” a spokesperson for the prime minister said in a statement.

    Syrian opposition accounts that between 500 and well over 1,000 civilians were killed this week by gas in munitions fired by pro-government forces, and video footage of victims’ bodies, have stoked demands abroad for a robust, U.S.-led response after 2 1/2 years of international inaction on Syria’s conflict.

    Syria sought to avert blame by saying its soldiers had found chemical weapons in rebel tunnels. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called his Syrian counterpart on Thursday to chide the government for not allowing U.N. inspectors access to the site.

    Obama has been reluctant to intervene in Syria’s civil war, but reports of the killings near Damascus have put pressure on the White House to make good on the president’s comment a year ago that chemical weapons would be a “red line” for the United States.

    The United States is repositioning naval forces in the Mediterranean to give Obama the option for an armed strike.

    “President Obama has asked the Defense Department to prepare options for all contingencies,” U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters in Malaysia as he began a week-long trip to Asia.

    “We have done that and we are prepared to exercise whatever option – if he decides to employ one of those options.”

    The White House declined to list what options were discussed on Saturday and said Washington was still gathering details about the attack.

    “In coordination with international partners and mindful of the dozens of contemporaneous witness accounts and record of the symptoms of those killed, the U.S. intelligence community continues to gather facts to ascertain what occurred,” it said in a statement.

    American and European security sources have said U.S. and allied intelligence agencies made a preliminary assessment that chemical weapons were used by Syrian forces in the attack. The United Nations has requested access to the site.

  • Another Founder Member Resigns From Moderate Party of Rwanda

    {{A new opposition political party has suffered another major defection as its Vice-President in charge of security Prosper Bamara (Senegal) resigned only six months after the establishement of the party.}}

    The Moderate Party of Rwanda led by former Rwandan Foreign Minister Anastase Gasana (U.S.) first cracked when one of its leaders vice president Abdallah Akishuli (Mayotte) decided to leave the party.

    The resignation of Mr. Bamara was published on a blog that asks rightly … the “relevance” of these political parties.

    Observers say the party since its establishment has been running on Internet as the only means of connecting with its members and its founders living in distant destinations and that in six months, the party members had not met.

    However, no explanations has been given over the rapid disintergration of the party and its survival.

  • Uganda Police Heavily Deploys at Tanzania Border

    {{Uganda Police have been deployed heavily on the Uganda-Tanzania border post to prevent Rwandans expelled from Tanzania from entering Uganda.}}

    President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania last month ordered for the expulsion of at least 20, 000 Rwandans who have been living in the country.

    Kikwete accused the Rwandans of illegal entry and settlement into the country. He said they came with their animals, which caused land wrangles.

    Kikwete ordered security forces to repatriate them to Rwanda because their stay into Tanzania had denied Tanzanians social services.

    An estimated 1200 Rwandans that heed Kikwete’s order have since crossed over into Uganda.

    Morocco surged into a 30-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They won the second quarter 20-15 and held a 25-point advantage at the halftime.

    It was Rwanda’s third successive defeat against Morocco at the Fiba Afrobasket championships following defeats in 2007 and 2009.

    In the second game, defending champions Tunisia routed debutants Burkina Faso 100-45 to put one foot in the second round.

    They won all four quarters 28-14; 28-10; 18-13; 26-8 to put the North African side into pole position to reach the knock-out stage.

    Ben Romdhane was the top scorer for Tunisia with 23 points, while El Mabrouk chipped in with 16 points.

    Tunisia leads Group B standings with four points followed by Rwanda and Morocco, who are tied on three points, while Burkina Faso is bottom of the table with two points.

    Action in Group B resumes on Sunday when Rwanda take on Tunisia as Morocco faces Burkina Faso.

  • EAC Diaspora Organise Business Summit in Texas

    {{Members of the East african diaspora in the United States have organised a Business Summit aimed at promoting investiment in Africa and connecting US investors to their African counterparts. }}

    The Business Summit organised by the East African Chamber of Commerce (EACC ) will be held October 17-19, in Dallas, Texas.

    The EACC was established by African diaspora members with roots in East Africa aimed at promoting development activities in the region as well as connecting regional investors to their counterparts in the United States.

    Alice Umutoni representing EACC in Washington DC and also deputy representative of the Rwandan community in US told IGIHE that Rwandans shouldn’t miss this opportunity.

    Umutoni was recently in Rwanda in preparations ahead of the forthcoming EACC Business Summit to be held in Texas state.

    According to Umutoni, the EACC Business Summit has been held six times but has not been attracting Rwandans owing to previous management that hailed from other countries in the region.

    She however, says the current management is held by a Rwandan National Frank Kanobana. Thus the forthcoming Business Summit is expected to attract more Rwandans because it has been well promoted among the Rwandans in diaspora and Rwanda.

    Umutoni advises that Rwandans should attend the Business Summit saying they would get in touch with US investors willing to invest in agriculture and other sectors and also providing better prices for various products from Rwanda.

    The Rwanda Development Board RDB says it will help whoever intends to attend the Business Summit.
