{At least 26 people have drowned after a boat filled with passengers and goods capsized on Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
}
The boat traveling north to the city of Uvira in South Kivu Province from the town of Kalemie in Katanga Province on the lake’s western shore went down early on Friday morning, survivors told AFP on Saturday.
According to Laurent Kahozi Sumba, Katanga’s transport minister, 221 of those on board were saved and it appears the vessel sank because it was overloaded.
High casualty shipwrecks are a frequent occurrence on DRC lakes and rivers, usually due to overloading, lack of lifejackets and passengers’ inability to swim.
Tanganyika, the world’s longest fresh water lake, is also bordered by Tanzania, Burundi and Zambia
