{Angola has as from Friday taken up the presidency of the Ministers of Finance of Southern and East Africa , in replacement of Namibia that led the regional grouping in the 2013-2014 period. }
At the ceremony that was attended by 60 member countries, the organisation’s current president, Armando Manuel, recognised the performance of his predecessor, the minister of Economy of Namibia, Saara Kuugongelwa.
At the opening of the meeting of the organisation’s Council of Ministers that gathers 17 Southern and East Africa member states, Armando Manuel told those present that Angola will continue working , developing and improving the measures to fight money laundering and financing of terrorism.
On the occasion, the group’s president appealed for an active cooperation from member countries, with a view to a successful presidency of the organisation and a fight against money laundering.
“There are many losses in the region that are caused by money laundering. The proliferation of criminal activities generates crime proceeds, affecting in investment opportunities that could contribute to the growth of the economies of the countries,” he said.
The official stated that the economies of most member countries of the region have showed great progress in overcoming the deficiencies noted in the mutual evaluations.
On the other hand, Armando Manuel expressed satisfaction with the approval of anti-capital bleaching laws in the member countries, which are developing processes to implement the laws.
He also congratulated Uganda on adopting money laundering laws in October 2013, and has since begun the implementation of the laws through the establishment of a financial intelligence unit.
