{The mayor of an Algerian town in the northern province of Tissemsilt has been killed by unidentified “terrorists,” security sources say.}
The body of Benyoucef Chelghoum, the mayor of the town of Bordj El Emir Abdelkader, was found at his farm just outside the town on Friday, police said.
Chelghoum, 56, was shot dead by armed men in the town, which is located in the southwest of the capital, Algiers.
No further explanation was provided regarding the incident, and it was not clear why “terrorists” were blamed.
No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but government officials often blame the militants of an al-Qaeda off-shoot in Africa, known as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), for such assaults.
The militants fought the army during a civil war in the 1990s and later formed the terror group.
