{Social Media practitioners, enthusiasts, influencers and users from the African continent will converge on Lagos for the first Social Media Awards, on Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6.}
The event which is powered by Sterling Bank Plc will begin with a Summit on Friday December 5, at the Event Centre, Alausa, Ikeja with the theme: “Social Media for Governance, Leadership and Development,” while the grand event and awards presentation will hold on Saturday, December 6 at BICS Garden, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Most of the participants from Kenya, South Africa and Tunisia have started arriving in Lagos for the award. Papers will be PRESENTED by social media experts across the globe.
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Plc, Mr. Yemi Adeola and the Minister for Communications and Technology, Mrs. Mobola Johnson are billed to attend the summit and deliver the host’s message, partner’s goodwill message and chief host’s message respectively.
Social communicator and author, Mug & Tweet, Rich Simmonds;Founder, Socialnomics, Eric Qualman; Chairman, Dragon Africa, Obi Asika; Chief Executive Officer, Crowd Centric & Founder, Social Media Week, Toby Daniels and Minister for ICT, Rwanda, Hon. Jean Philbert Nsengimana will PRESENT keynote addresses at the event, while Executive Director at Sterling Bank Plc, Abubakar Suleiman; Chief Executive Officer, Africa Media Initiative (AMI) Eric Chinje and others will serve as moderators among other top personalities invited to the event.
Topics for discussions at the summit will include: Social Media and the Future of Africa; Trends and Implications for Business; Leadership and Development; Perspectives on Social Media; Brands and The Quest for Relevance; Social Worth and Social Media as a lever for Public Governance.
The Group Head, Strategy and Communications, Sterling Bank Plc, Mr. Shina Atilola, in a statement explained that the award had recorded 80,000 votes as at last weekend with 4 million impressions worldwide.
Atilola stated that the Hashtag #SMAA2014 had trended on twitter four times since the unveiling of the awards, reaching a cumulative population of 48.9 million twitter users globally adding that “the highest day reach on Twitter was 13.8 million.
Apart from Twitter, SMAA is strongly present on 15 social media platforms, reaching several millions of non-twitter users,” he stated.
He explained that votes were cast to determine the WINNERS in various categories including blogger of the year; social media personality of the year; social media hero; Facebook page of the year; Twitter handle of the year; influencer of the year among others.
According to him, the Social Media Awards Africa 2014, has grown in leaps and bounds since the nomination and voting kicked off. “The awards have trended globally and became the second most talked about subject on Twitter in Nigeria, South Africa the United Kingdom and the United States. The SMAA website has climbed to the 535th website in Kenya, 703rd in Nigeria and 15,113th in Belgium,” he said.
According to him: “The level of interest and PARTICIPATION has been very heart-warming and the organisers must be commended for a job well done. We at Sterling Bank would continue to provide the required support to aid the achievement of the objectives of the Award.”
