He also reassured residents that the region will not fall into the hands of terrorists and other criminal gangs.
Speaking at Garissa Primary School where he attended a fundraising drive in aid of Madrasa Khadija Girls and Imam Malik Education Centre, Mr Ruto thanked political leaders for supporting the government instead of blaming each other and pointing fingers following numerous terrorist attacks in the region.
The Deputy President said cooperation between the public and police had led to the arrest of many suspected terrorists, foiling major attacks on Kenyan soil.
“I also applaud security personnel from the county commissioner’s office for the wonderful job they are doing.
“I also want to assure you that the government will not allow an inch of Kenyan soil to be controlled by terrorists, criminal gangs or people who want to destabilise this part of our country,” he told thousands of people who turned up for the event.
Mr Ruto also announced that 53 new police vehicles will be deployed to the region to improve security and help in the fight against terrorists.
Speaking at the same function, Garissa Governor Nathif Jama said county governments in the northeastern region will work with the national government to ensure peace and security is restored.
He said funds had been set aside to help police increase their patrols.
“There can be no development without proper security, that is why we are supporting the national government so that security is fully restored,” said Mr Jama.
The Deputy President was accompanied by about 40 Members of Parliament from different political parties, who included National Assembly Majority Leader and Garissa Township MP Aden Duale.
Also in the entourage was Mandera Governor Ali Roba and Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo.
“We appeal to the national government to support the regional coordinator and his team by giving them sufficient resources.
