{Dire poverty among Ugandans deprives them of their human rights. This has been justified by their lack of knowledge and awareness, a report has shown.}
Kristian Schmidt European Union, Head of delegation launched the report in Kampala. Its titled: Human Rights and Poverty: Eradicating extreme poverty in Uganda. It was conducted by the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI).
The report among others issues discuss extreme poverty taking into account socio-cultural, economic and political factors as well as the historical content.
It examines equal rights of men and women, freedom from torture, rights of life, liberty and security of a person, fair trial, treatment of persons in places of detention, freedom of expression and political space rights.
The report advocates for a human rights approach to the eradication of this vice.
Angella Nabwoowe the programs manager, Initiative for Social and Economic rights, said while the government seems fully committed to promoting the rights to education, health, food and housing among others, extreme poverty in Uganda has become an abuse of human rights as most people are not even aware of their rights.
“Government introduced UPE as one of their objectives to eradicate extreme poverty by availing pupils with knowledge and skills on how to stem the vice, but they did not look at the bigger picture of quality of education, feeding, teacher’s pay, teacher pupil ratio among others. Parents have neglected their responsibilities and entirely given them up for the government to take on,” she said.
According to Nabwoowe, government has given up on the education system yet this should be the core and has given up the system to Privatization which has brought a big gap between the rich and poor.
On his part, Dr. John Sekamate of National Planning Authority, government eradicates poverty and is working on the National Development Plan (NDP) to increase productivity, improve infrastructure, invest in human capital development among other programs.
