{IN a move to wasteful spending in public funds, President John Magufuli on Friday ordered Parliament officials to slash a big chunk of funds allocated for a party and directed that the money should be used to buy beds at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).}
The president was disgusted after learning from a Bunge Official, Mr Saidi Yakubu, that the Speaker’s Office had allocated 225m/- for throwing a lavish party to mark the inauguration of the 11th Parliament.
He advised the Parliament to spend between 10m/- and 20m/- for the occasion, saying other funds should go to MNH to reduce the number of patients sleeping on the floor. The patriotic decision demonstrates the president’s resolve to bring to an end profligate spending and instead ordered the officials to channel resources to improve social services. He reiterated that most of the pledges he made during his two-month campaign trail were real and not a hoax.
“When I was promising the people that I want to serve Tanzanians I was not deceiving them in order to win voters. I was serious and I meant it,” he stressed. “We promised those who voted and those who did not vote for us, that we will serve them and work hard to solve social problems they are facing. “We must tighten our belts and address problems in delivery of social services. let us live and walk our talks,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by MPs and other dignitaries as well as diplomats, government officials and civil servants. The guests were served with cashew nut, water, soft drinks and few bottles of wine.
