{Kampala- Suspects in the pension scam were for the second time denied bail yesterday by the Anti-Corruption Court.}
Instead, the court had the secretary to the Treasury, Mr Keith Muhakanizi, testify against them.
Justice Lawrence Gidudu observed that with the trio on remand, the trial is ongoing unlike earlier when the Shs165 billion pension case was dismissed.
The suspects include Mr Jimmy Lwamafa, the former permanent secretary Public Service ministry, Mr Christopher Obey, the former principal accountant, and Mr Stephen Kunsa Kiwanuka, the former director research and development.
They face several charges in connection with an alleged fraudulent budgeting of more than Shs88 billion of civil servants’ pension contributions to National Social Security Fund (NSSF) well knowing that civil servants don’t contribute to NSSF.
The judge also noted that while obvious factors like presumption of innocence, fixed place of abode, previously honoured bail terms, advanced age, and sickness are in favour of releasing the suspects on bail, when weighed with other factors such as colossal sums of money involved, incapacity of sureties, likely interference with witnesses, bail offer is withheld.
