Kikwete to bid teachers farewell at Teachers’ Union meeting

President Jakaya Kikwete is tomorrow expected to officiate the ninth annual general meeting (AGM) of the Tanzania Teachers’ Union (TTU) to be held in Arusha’s Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge.

He is also expected to use the opportunity to bid farewell to teachers as he accomplishes his ten-year tenure in office as the country’s president.

Deputy Secretary General of TTU Ezekiah Oluoch said here last weekend that the AGM will end with the election of the union’s national leaders. So far 28 teachers have expressed their intention to contest for various TTU posts.

The AGM will be attended by more than 1,000 members from various parts of the country. There will also be guest teachers from ten African and other countries. They include Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Denmark.
In attendance will also be former TTU chairperson Margret Sitta and a number of cabinet ministers.

Every district will be represented by six members at the AGM. It will also receive a report of the eighth AGM as well as approve the 2015-2020 strategic plan.

Members of the TTU, which caters for Tanzania mainland, are teachers from public and private schools, tutors from teacher training colleges (TTCs), folk development colleges and education officers in the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.

TTU members comprise about 63 percent of all public servants and about 85 percent of all public servants in Tanzania mainland’s Local Government Authorities (LGAs).
