DRC Government redirects MONUSCO to conduct its Own operations Against Rebels

{DRC Government Spokesperson has said MONUSCO can lead its own operations without the Armed Forces of the DRC against all armed groups that roam the country}.

Lambert Mende, who was speaking during a press conference in Kinshasa on Monday, said that it is the duty of MONUSCO to conduct operations against the rebels.

“This is part of its mandate,” he added.

The Head of State, Joseph Kabila, announced yesterday that his country renounced any support of the UN Mission in the DRC in tracking down against Rwandan FDLR rebels.

The spokesman of the government explained that this decision only concerns the collaboration between the FARDC and MONUSCO in operations against the FDLR. “Do not go any further; I think that’s the decision. There are not other operations. There are not other tasks entrusted to this mission and again that the resolution of the UN Security Council mandates the UN mission to track down, disarm armed groups with or without the defense forces and DRC’s security forces, “he continued.

For Lambert Mende, MONUSCO can disarm these armed groups “if it really comes to this.” “So if there is a logical, since the DRC wants to do without [MONUSCO], there should be an initiative of MONUSCO, thus disarm these people. There are ways to [disarmament] without the FARDC if we really came here for that, “said the spokesman of the Congolese government.

MONUSCO welcomes the commitment of the government of the DRC to take sole charge to neutralize the FDLR, as decided yesterday by the head of state Joseph Kabila. The acting spokesman for the UN Mission, Charles Bambara, said Monday the 16th of February. “We welcome the strong commitment of the government to take over the neutralization of FDLR. MONUSCO on his side will continue to work closely with the Congolese government to fulfill the mandate entrusted to it by the Security Council, “said Charles Bambara.
