Mwinyi on Who Should Replace Kikwete

{Former Tanzanian president Ali Hassan Mwinyi has backed January Makamba for State House. The son of prominent Chama cha Mapinduzi cadre and immediate former CCM secretary-general Yusuph Makamba is one of the young presidential aspirants in this year’s election.}

An influential figure in the ruling party, Mr Mwinyi has written a preface to a book, 40 Questions: Interview with January Makamba on New Tanzania, authored by Father Privatus Karugendo.

He writes: “It is obvious that Makamba either has been prepared or has prepared himself well to take top leadership position.” The former president describes Mr Makamba, 40, as one of the most effective leaders of our time who will do justice to his generation.

“I am glad that our country and our President Jakaya Kikwete have continued the tradition Mwalimu Nyerere started and I carried on, to trust and give an opportunity to the youth and groom them to lead our country,” writes Mr Mwinyi.

Mr Mwinyi states that every era has its own book and its own prophets.

“Every era has its own book, every era has its own challenges and every era has its own prophets,” he writes. “The one who belongs to the particular era will do justice to their generation when they record the woes and hopes of the era in question.
“I have learnt that in reading this conversation on the Tanzania Comrade Makamba wants.”

Mr Mwinyi appointed the current president deputy minister at 38, minister for water, energy and minerals two years later and then minister for finance.
