Tanzania: 4 political parties to revive ties; field one presidential candidate

{Four opposition parties in the country signed an agreement on their revived cooperation, including fielding a joint presidential candidate in the 2015 general elections.}

Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) Secretary General Willibrod Slaa read the agreement on behalf of his counterparts in Dar es Salaam, saying the new cooperation will start effectively in the local government election slated for December 14, 2014.

Other parties forming the coalition are Civic United Front (CUF), NCCR-Mageuzi and the National League for Democracy (NLD).

“We will field joint candidates effective from the coming elections for street and village leaders, and later move on to the ward, parliamentary, house of representatives and presidential elections,” said Dr Slaa, noting that all the four parties will harmonise their policies and adapt their common arguments.

He said the details of how the parties will cooperate in the coming elections and the general election next year will be communicated to respective levels of leadership when the appropriate time comes.

Dr Slaa said the parties will jointly raise public awareness and convince Tanzanians to vote against the proposed constitution, which he said has not addressed the interests of the people.

However, he said the four-party coalition supports and has promised to protect the union without creating conflict of interest as it has happened with the proposed constitution.

CUF Secretary General and Zanzibar First Vice-President Seif Sharif Hamad said Zanzibaris were against the proposed constitution which he said deserves to “go into the dustbin.”

NCCR-Mageuzi National Chairman James Mbatia said the parties have reached the agreement for the national interest and not to please their individual parties, expressing dismay on some statements bent on discrediting the opposition parties before members of the public.
