{The Secretary of State for National Defence Policy, Admiral Gaspar Rufino dos Santos, Wednesday met with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Great Lakes region, Said Djinnit, as part of the first visit of the latter to Angola.}
The UN envoy, who was recently appointed to the post, said his first visit was intended to hold contact with the Angolan authorities.
The official said that Angola, which chairs the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region, has been making progress toward the stability of this African sub-region.
Said Djinnit said that the meeting with the high ranking officer of National Defence Policy focused on the great lakes situation and was intended to examine the possibility to work together with a view to promoting peace and stability in the region.
“Angola takes up the chair of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), reason why I have come to get in touch with the local authorities and work together
toward the achievement of our goals”, stressed the UN envoy.
In his turn, Gaspar Rufino considered the meeting with the visiting official a complement that will allow to develop their functions, under the promotion of harmony in the region, taking into account the trips he made to Uganda, Rwanda and DRC and then in Luanda.
It was a fruitful meeting, mainly because it is the first time the representative of the UN Secretary-General travels to Luanda, he said.
He added that he seized the occasion to congratulate him for having recently been appointed to this post, which enabled to exchange of views on the prevailing situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and in other parts of the continent.
As for the current situation concerning stability in the Great Lakes, the official said that the region has known little progress compared with the assessment made about two or three months ago
